FAQs
📅 Program Timeline & Logistics
When does my trip officially begin and end?
Your trip officially begins with our organization when you check in for orientation, and ends when you exit the team flight on your return home.
You will need to arrive in NY for orientation on the afternoon/evening of July 8, 2026. You will begin to travel home from our partner site on July 23, 2026. If you choose to participate in the optional end-of-trip excursion, you will begin to travel home on July 25, 2026.
Travel time for your return home will depend on multiple factors, for your personal scheduling back home, please plan for 1-2 days of travel at the conclusion of your trip.
When will I receive flight details or book my travel?
You’ll receive guidance on booking flights at least 2 months before your trip. We’ll walk you through booking and provide you with more detailed information as our trip gets closer.
You will be financially responsible for your flights. Our travel agent will assist you with the flight booking process.
What happens during orientation?
During orientation you will meet your team in person for the first time, you will learn more about our mission and your place in it, and of course prepare for success at our partner site.
💬 Communication & Support
Who do I go to with questions during the program?
For fundraising, travel, or logistics questions, reach out to the Global Autism Project staff via email or text message. During your trip your first point of contact is your Team Leader.
Will I meet my team before the trip?
Yes! You’ll have several virtual meetings leading up to your departure so you can get to know your team and align on goals.
What if I need to miss a meeting or deadline?
Life happens! Let us know as early as possible. We’ll work with you to stay on track.
💰 Fundraising & Financials
How much do I need to fundraise?
The fundraising commitment is $9,500. This covers training, accommodations, some meals, in-country transportation, and project resources.
What happens if I don’t meet my fundraising goal?
We’ll support you every step of the way, but it’s important to meet your goal in order to participate. Reach out early if you're struggling—we have tools, strategies, and encouragement ready for you.
Can people donate directly to me or write a check?
Yes! Instructions for check donations and offline gifts can be found in the Fundraising section of the portal. If someone donates directly to you, their donation will not be tax deductible, in this case you will then donate the funds to your fundraising page and you will receive the tax deduction.
Where does the fundraised money go, if it isn’t covering flights?
Your fundraising commitment isn’t just about covering the cost of the trip—it’s a direct investment in the mission, vision, and ongoing work of the Global Autism Project. Every dollar helps create sustainable, community-led change around the world.
Crowdfunding is a big piece of the program, and we provide coaching, lessons, and support every step of the way in your portal. There are powerful personal and professional development lessons in fundraising – like learning to get out of your own way, navigating complex conversations, or even how to ask for help when you need support.
✈️ Travel Insurance
Do I need travel insurance?
While Insurance regulations prohibit us from requiring travel insurance- we HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you purchase comprehensive travel coverage.
Will I need a visa or special documents?
It depends on your destination. The Global Autism Project team will provide visa guidance and documentation if needed. You will need a valid passport to travel to any of our partner site locations.
Is it safe to travel to the partner site?
We monitor travel advisories and partner closely with in-country organizations. Your safety is our top priority.
🎒 Packing & Prep
What should I pack?
A detailed packing list is provided in the Travel section of the portal. Generally, plan for modest clothing, travel essentials, and some of your favorite snacks. It is important to pack in a carry-on bag to avoid losing your luggage, or having difficulty moving your luggage throughout the trip.
Will I have access to Wi-Fi or phone service?
Most sites have some access, but it can vary. You’ll receive specifics for your location closer to your trip. It is recommended that you get an international phone plan during your trip.
💼 Professional Expectations and Behavior
What’s expected of me during the trip?
You’re representing the Global Autism Project and collaborating with our partner site. We expect professionalism, flexibility, cultural humility, and a commitment to ethical practices.
How do I navigate cultural differences at the partner site?
Orientation will include details on cultural context, and your team and partner site will guide you. The goal is to build capacity with, not for, our partners.
🧠 Skill Development and Teamwork
What kind of training will I get before the trip?
You’ll go through virtual modules, team meetings, and coaching sessions covering leadership, behavior analysis, global service, and cross-cultural collaboration.
What kind of project will we work on at the partner site?
Projects vary, but they’re always based on the needs and goals of the partner. Your team will co-develop a sustainable plan during the trip.
🔁 After the Trip
What happens after I return?
You’ll participate in a virtual end of trip meeting, share your reflections, and explore opportunities to stay involved (alumni network, mentorship, fundraising, and more!).
How can I stay involved with the Global Autism Project?
Alumni often return as Team Leaders, join future trips, fundraise, or engage in local advocacy. We’ll invite you to ongoing initiatives and events.
