SkillCorps India team has finally all arrived and we are so happy to be back at SOREM!! Today is the end of our second day here, and it’s been so amazing that I’ve hardly had time to blog. Yesterday was our first day at the center, and it was really rewarding to see how much the teachers have progressed since we were here in December. SOREM has two main autism classrooms that we focus in, one for older children with autism (mainly adolescents) and one for younger children with autism (ages 5-12). Last time we visited, we focused on reinforcement. This time, we were amazed to see how much the teachers were applying the principles! They were able to “catch the children being good” and reinforce appropriate behavior instead of problem behavior, which is a really tricky skill! They have come a long way in 6 months!
We also have an amazing team– we’ve finally brought with us a speech therapist to work with Anita, and she is soooo pleased. Our team has so many great ideas for how to work with Anita and the teachers in both autism classrooms. We are beyond excited! It is also great to see Sangeeta and Suvrat again. Sangeeta had the team to her house yesterday for lunch, and we left stuffed full of amazing food, hospitality, and love– one the the hallmarks of being at SOREM in India. We have so quickly bonded as a team and with the teachers at the school, it’s amazing and we are so excited for the next two weeks! Keep checking back for updates!!
